The future of the 45-year-old golfer is now in question after Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played competitively in nearly a month, was in a rollover crash in Los Angeles.
According to a statement, Woods suffered “significant orthopaedic injuries” which required the insertion of a rod in his tibia as well as combination of rods and screws into his foot and ankle.
Police reported that the winner of 15 major championships had to be “extricated from the wreck with the ‘jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.”
Woods apparently lost control of his vehicle, hit a curb and a tree before rolling over several times, Alex Villanueva, the Los Angeles County sheriff, said.
Woods, one of the true legends of the game, is evidently a much better golfer than driver. In 2021, he was involved in a similar car wreck.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods was driving about 85mph in a 45mph zone and was “lucky to be alive.” As it stood, surgeons used metal parts to reconstruct a shattered fibula. One of his doctors said it was “unclear” if he’d be able to play golf again.
In November 2021, almost six months after the crash, Woods said he was unlikely to ever return to the PGA Tour full-time. “You practice around that, and you gear yourself up for that. I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it,” he remarked.
His injuries in that 2021 crash probably contributed to the severity of his injuries in the 2025 crash. Such episodes are common. Many car crash victims have pre-existing conditions that contribute to the risk and/or severity of injuries.
Thanks to the eggshell skull rule, an Experienced Personal Injury Attorney can obtain the same compensation in these cases. Defendants, usually insurance companies, must take victims as they find them. Insurance companies cannot cash in on a victim’s vulnerabilities.
The eggshell skull rule often complicates settlement negotiations. Most insurance companies use actuarial tables to determine damages in car wreck cases.
For example, when Woods hurt his leg and ankle in the 2025 crash, the insurance company pays compensation based on that injury alone. But, in effect, Woods’ current injuries were twice as bad, due to his previous injuries.
The difference not only affects medical bills, perhaps the largest component of damages in a personal injury matter. The difference also affects other economic losses, most significantly lost wages, which really means lost future economic opportunities. If this crash forces Woods to retire from golf and leave the public eye, his considerable earnings may drop to almost nothing.
We should consider pain and suffering as well. A worse injury means a longer and more painful treatment and recovery process. Anxiety over the future, whether you’re a professional golfer or a housecleaner, compounds this pain and suffering.
So, before meaningful settlement negotiations begin, a Personal Injury Attorney Riverside must thoroughly prepare a case and completely understand what the victim is going through.
