School Lab Experiment Causes Injuries

March 27, 2017

Lab experiments are both educational and fun, but a recent chemistry lab gone wrong left five students injured. During the experiment at a Glendale school, a beaker exploded. The shattering glass gave the students serious cuts and more minor scratches. The experiment was part of an after-school STEM class for middle school and high school students, according to ABC 7.

Every chemistry classroom and program has their own safety rules to follow. It is important for instructors and students to be careful in lab experiments, especially when dangerous equipment and chemical are involved. However, when accidents happen, injured students may be able to bring a lawsuit for their injuries.

Common Injuries Caused by Lab Experiments

When accidents happen in lab experiments, students can suffer a variety of injuries. The type of injury depends on both the type of experiment (including what chemicals were used) and how the accident occurred (explosion, dropped beakers, etc.). According to Know Atom, these are some of the most common injuries:

  • Heat burns
  • Chemical burns
  • Cuts and scrapes
  • Headaches and nausea

Some serious chemistry lab accidents can require medical attention. This can cause students to miss valuable class time, for a day or even longer. Parents may have to lose time at work, as well, to take care of injured children.

Legal Help After a Lab Experiment Accident

Often, school lab accidents may be caused by a failure to give instructions, unsafe equipment, and negligent supervision. These provide a variety of legal grounds to recover under for lab experiment injuries. Instructors, supervisors, and the school district may all be liable for students’ injuries. The more serious the injury the more likely it is that you can recover all injury-related expenses. But first, you will need a good lawyer on your side.
